Former Edison Fire Chief Mourned

Services for retired Fire Chief G. Robert Campbell, of Roanoke, Va., are taking place Saturday in the Edison area.

EDISON, NJ — Services are being held this Saturday for retired Fire Chief G. Robert Campbell, 75, a resident of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Edison.

Campbell passed away on Thursday, Feb. 15, according to his obituary. He was born on April 14, 1948, in Newark.

His passing was marked at a recent Township Council meeting Feb. 15, where he was praised for a "legacy remembered by all."

Campbell was appointed an Edison firefighter in 1971. He rose through the ranks and was appointed department chief in January of 1999. He retired in 2006 and then served as an instructor at the Middlesex County Fire Academy in Sayreville, his obituary states.

He was a member of the first graduating class of Edison's J.P. Stevens High School in 1965. He attended Union Junior College before completing his B.A. in Political Science at Clemson University in 1970, his obituary said.

His family received family and friends Friday evening, Feb. 23, at Boylan Funeral Home - Edison, 10 Wooding Ave.

A graveside service with honors is to take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth.

The family will be at The Raritan River Boat Club, Player Avenue, Edison after the service.

"All are invited to join the family there for a celebration of Robert's life," Campbell's obituary says.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Salvation Army in his honor.
