Kitten Trapped In Edison Storm Drain Evades Firefighters
Firefighters spent 36 hours trying to free the kitten, which eventually freed itself.
EDISON, NJ — A kitten freed itself from a storm drain after Edison first responders spent 36 unsuccessful hours trying to get it out.
The kitten became stuck in a storm drain between Costco and the Walmart Tire Center on Rt. 27 Saturday evening. Several people called police to say they heard a loud meowing coming from the storm drain.
Firefighters and animal control were unable to reach or even see the cat inside the storm drain, but spent hours trying to lure it out.

"We put cat food and fresh water down there for the cat. But, we could not keep firefighters on the scene all night," Edison Deputy Fire Chief Andy Toth said. "More rescue attempts were made Sunday without success. We could hear the cat, so we knew it was doing okay."
Township crews came with equipment on Monday, but by that point the cat was already gone.

"It safely found its way out a drainpipe opening into a nearby retention pond behind Costco and Walgreens. We believe that’s how this cat initially got into the storm drain," Toth said.
