NJ Transit Strike Impacts Edison, Metuchen Travel: Here Are Your Options

This is the first NJ Transit strike in more than 40 years.

EDISON, NJ — Residents in Edison, Metuchen and those in surrounding communities are facing significant disruptions as the NJ Transit train strike halts rail service.

Following failed contract negotiations between NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen on Thursday night, all rail service was suspended Friday, including the Northeast Line serving Edison and Metuchen stations.

This is the first NJ Transit strike in more than 40 years. The next round of talks is scheduled for Sunday.

Meanwhile, many commuters have been left stranded. But NJ Transit has released a contingency plan.

NJ Transit Enhanced Bus Service

Starting Monday, May 19, if the strike continues, four park-and-ride locations will operate during peak weekday hours. Here are your options:

  • Woodbridge Center Mall to Harrison PATH Station: Service runs 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. toward Harrison, and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. returning to Woodbridge. Purchase Woodbridge–Newark rail tickets via the NJ TRANSIT mobile app. Parking and boarding near Sears.
  • Metuchen Mayor Jonathan M Busch announced a collaboration with Boxcar. After working with Borough officials, luxury bus commuting service Boxcar has launched a roundtrip “Metuchen Limited” service beginning Monday from the Halsey Street lot.   • Most NJ Transit bus routes, including those in Metuchen, will operate on their normall schedules.

Cross-Honoring Information

  • NJ Transit rail tickets and passes will be honored on all NJ TRANSIT bus and light rail lines
  • These tickets will NOT be accepted on Amtrak, MTA, PATH, PATCO, SEPTA, ferries, or private carrier buses
  • Separate fares must be purchased for these alternative services

Parking Information

  • Regular parking fees and hours remain in effect at all NJ TRANSIT train stations
  • Free parking is available at Woodbridge Center Mall and PNC Arts Center for supplemental bus service

Traffic Impact

Expect increased congestion on major roadways, including Interstate 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike. NJ Transit recommends working from home if possible and limiting system use to essential travel only.
