No Fireworks For Diwali, Officials Tell Edison Residents

Due to dry weather conditions, township officials have asked residents to refrain from using any type of fireworks during Diwali.

EDISON, NJ — Diwali, one of the biggest festivals for the Indian American community will be a little different this year.

Usually, Diwali is celebrated with fireworks, but this year, officials are asking residents to refrain from using any type of fireworks due to dry weather conditions. Diwali will be officially celebrated from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.

On Monday, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service implemented Stage 3 fire restrictions as the state deals with historically dry conditions.

Under the restrictions, charcoal fires are prohibited. All fires in wooded areas must be contained in an elevated stove, using only propane, natural gas, gas, or electricity.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Red Flag warning for Edison.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly due to a combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and dry fuels.

“The combination of very dry conditions, low relative humidity, and gusty winds will result in favorable conditions for the rapid spread of fires. Any fires that develop may become difficult to contain, especially across the Pine Barrens region,” the NWS said.

The Edison Division of Fire will not be issuing any permits for bonfires, open burning, or fireworks until further notice. "This precaution is essential to ensure the safety of our residents during this critical time," Fire Chief Andy Toth and Mayor Sam Joshi said in a statement.

"As we approach the celebration of Diwali, we kindly request that all residents refrain from using any type of fireworks, including legal fireworks, to ensure everyone's safety."

Edison's Diwali celebration on Saturday did not have any fireworks, instead, there will be a drone show.
