New Englewood School Board Members Sworn In [PHOTOS]

Board trustees Devry Pazant, Carol Feinstein and Junius Carter were sworn in at Thursday's re-organization meeting.

The slate of three reform-minded Englewood Board of Education challengers who prevailed in last week's election were sworn in at Thursday's re-organization meeting.

Surrounded by family, Devry Pazant, Carol Feinstein and Junius Carter each took their oaths before a supportive and energized crowd.

Bolstered by strong Fourth Ward turnout last Tuesday, the trio pulled off a clean sweep of nine-year board veterans Stephen Brown and Glenn Garrison, and their chosen running mate, Amy Ginsberg.

Pazant, the election's leading vote-getter, is a TD Bank branch manager who stressed the need to open up a better line of communication with district parents during his campaign and suggested holding separate "listening meetings" so parents could sound off without further extending the already-lengthy board meetings.

Feinstein, a retired Englewood teacher and the former president of the Englewood Teachers Association, has bemoaned the board's "watering down" of the district's dual language program and its outsourcing of district secretaries and classroom assistants.

Carter, an employee of the Bergen County Special Services School District, has criticzed the board's priorities and spending habits, and said he'd like to see the schools take better advantage of the city's active volunteer base to mentor students.
