New Student Dress Code to Start at Quarles School
School officials say the new uniform dress code—white or maroon tops and khaki or navy blue pants—will start with the district's youngest children and hopefully carry over with them through the higher grades.

When school opens on Sept. 6, pre-K and Kindergarten students at Englewood’s D.A. Quarles Early Childhood Center will be wearing new uniforms, something school officials say is the beginning of a new initiative they hope will “follow” students as they move onto Grieco Elementary School next year and carry on through high school.
“You can’t require youngsters to be in a uniform in a public school system, but you can try to package a program where people buy in,” said Superintendent Donald Carlisle. “So we’ve been promoting the idea that we’re going to have uniforms.”
That means boys at the school will wear maroon or white shirts and navy blue or khaki pants with elastic waistbands and adjustable waists, while girls can choose to wear pants or “skorts,” which also have to be khaki or navy, according to school officials.

Carlisle called the idea of having students wear uniforms as they move through the school system the district’s “best laid plans,” but that for now, school officials are taking the new dress code one year at a time.
“We’re going to start this initiative, and we’re hoping that it will gain a lot of momentum, and we can move to next year going to another school,” he said.
