Starbucks to Offer Reusable Cup

Starting Thursday, Starbucks will be offering a more eco-friendly way to enjoy their coffee

According to the Detroit Free Press, the coffee giant will begin selling reusable cups on Jan. 3 in an attempt to reduce the waste created by customers purchasing millions of beverages every day—and throwing their cups away. The cups will retail for $1 and fill up to a grande size of a cup of joe.

Each refill in a reusable cup—be it one of the new tumblers or another Starbucks mug—earns the user a dime off their purchase.

The cups have already debuted on the west coast, but will hit all Starbucks location in the U.S. on Thursday.

"We see real excitement about these cups," Starbucks' Jim Hanna told the Free Press. "People think they’re cool."

Both Starbucks and Michigan chain Biggby Coffee already offer a discount to customers who come in for a coffee refill with their reusable travel mug. However, those type of drink containers can cost $10 or more. Hanna said he believes the low price of Starbucks' new cup will drive use.
