Fair Lawn Police Increasing Presence in Schools

Cops are going to become a common sight in Fair Lawn schools this fall.

Fair Lawn Police will begin making regular visits to schools during their patrols in order to beef up school security, better prepare themselves in the event of an emergency and make students more at ease in officers' presence, Interim Police Chief Glen Cauwels said.

The Fair Lawn Council also voted in favor of re-implementing the D.A.R.E. program for 6th-graders in three of the district’s schools during their meeting Tuesday night.

'World's Strongest Girl' Sets Another World Record

Powerlifting Fair Lawn resident Naomi Kutin, called "the world's strongest girl" and "Supergirl," recently set the world record for the 97-pound woman's raw squat by lifting 225 pounds.

Naomi, 11, beat her own previous record of 214.9 pounds while lifting in Bordentown Sunday.

Convicted Burglar Charged with Trespassing Near Site of Break-In

A convicted burglar who had been charged in a home break-in on Kenneth Avenue in 2011, was picked up by police Friday for trespassing on the same street where a home was burglarized the day before, police said.

Although the man, identified as 24-year-old Robert Lindsay, of Oakland, has not been charged in Thursday's break-in on Northern Drive, he has been charged with trespassing and providing false information to police.

Wagner Pulls Out of State Assembly Race

Assemblywoman Connie Wagner announced Tuesday she will not seek re-election to the state assembly in November citing family reasons which will require her to spend much of her time out of state in the next year.

Incoming Saddle Brook Superintendent Meets With Parents

Parents, students and faculty members of the Saddle Brook School District stopped by the high school Monday night to meet with Richard Katz, the district’s new superintendent of schools.

Katz, who was recently approved by the school board for a five-year contract, is the current superintendent, principal and director of special services for Hunterdon County’s Clinton-Glen Gardner district, a position he has held since 2009.

Torch Run Raises Money for Special Olympics

Police Officers from throughout Bergen County took part in the statewide 2013 Special Olympics of New Jersey Torch Run Friday morning. In the Northwestern Bergen leg of the race, about 170 police officers from Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook, the Bergen County Sherriff’s Department, NJ State Police, and dozens of nearby agencies participated, running through the rain, passing a torch from town to town.

Fair Lawn Rescue Squad Wins Governor's Award

The Fair Lawn Rescue Squad won the "Governor’s Continued Excellence Award" at the 85 annual Governor's Occupational Safety & Health Awards May 23.

The squad has won the award, which is the highest given at the event, two years in a row. It is given to those who have participated in the saftey and health program for five or more years without work-related injuries or illnesses causing lost time.

"I'm always happy that we have a safe year," Rescue Squad Chief Peter Yuskaitis said.  "It's really a credit to the guys."

Fair Lawn Government's Summer Hours Start This Week

The Fair Lawn government will be closed on Fridays starting this week and lasting through August. 

For the four days each week municipal offices are open, employees will start a half-hour earlier and close an hour later. The offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays.
