Coyote Sightings Reported in Fair Lawn

Multiple coyote sightings have been reported in the southern end of Fair Lawn the past two days, police said.

Police received calls on Monday that a coyote was spotted on Grunauer Place and in the rear of 3-35 Banta Place, and again Tuesday that a coyote was seen in the area of 33rd and 34th streets, Sgt. Richard Schultz said.

Schultz said that both police and animal control went to investigate the reports, but could not find the coyote or coyotes in question.

Police said coyotes, which are often about the size of dogs, appear in Fair Lawn infrequently, but are not unheard of. They usually appear along the Saddle River corridor, Schultz said.

Residents should be careful not to leave small pets unattended if they suspect coyotes may be near because the animals are often hungry and roaming in search of food, Detective David Boone said.
