Effort To Help Fair Lawn Fireman Hit, Dragged By Car On Rt. 17

A 23-year-old Fair Lawn firefighter was seriously injured after he struck by a car and dragged at least 50 yards down Route 17.

FAIR LAWN, NJ – A fundraiser effort is underway to help a 23-year-old Fair Lawn firefighter who was seriously injured after he struck by a car and dragged at least 50 yards down Route 17 in Maywood.

On Aug. 10, Kyle Wilson heading to the Meadowlands Flea Market with his girlfriend and infant son, when another driver rear-ended his truck in the left lane of Route 17 south. When Wilson got out of his car to check on his son, a driver used the shoulder to go around him and he wound up getting struck and dragged down the highway, according to the campaign’s organizer, Travis Morrison.

After spending several days hospitalized in critical condition, doctors were able to assess the full extent of his injuries once the swelling went down. His injuries included a shattered spine, three broken ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung and a contusion on his head.

His recovery will require intensive outpatient physical therapy and money raised will help any upfront medical costs, as well as go towards the needs of his family while Wilson is out of work, according to Morrison.

As of Monday afternoon, a GoFundMe page set up for Wilson has raised $2,245 towards its goal of $10,000. Click here to view the campaign.

“Kyle lives a selfless life of dedication to others with the Fair Lawn Fire Dept, graduating from the Bergen County Fire Academy, class 456 in summer of 2012,” Morrison said.

Additional information, including whether the driver who struck Wilson has been charged, was not immediately available from Maywood police.
