Fair Lawn Police Rewarding Children Who Wear Helmets
Police distribute coupons for treats as part of the "Hooray For Helmets" program.

Local children riding bikes, scooters or skateboards are going to want to keep an eye out for the police later this month.
Fair Lawn Police and the Rotary Club are planning to start their "Hooray For Helmets" program promoting safe riding starting July, according to Det. Sgt. Brian Metzler 15. Any child who is "caught" wearing a helmet by an officer will receive a coupon for a free frozen treat at a local eatery.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "a helmet is the single most effective way to prevent head injury resulting from a bicycle crash."
There were 677 cyclists killed in 2011, the most recent data available, of which 10 percent were 16 years-old or younger, according to the NHTSA. Seventeen of the cyclist fatalities that year occurred in New Jersey.
For the "Hooray For Helmets" program, children will be able to redeem their treat coupons at the following businesses:
- Carvel, 12-72 River Road, Fair Lawn
- Yogurt Plus, 14-25 Plaza Road, Fair Lawn
- Haagen-Dazs, 23-12 Fair Lawn Avenue, Fair Lawn
- Rita’s Ice, 1020 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock
- Baskin Robbins, 886 Prospect Street, Glen Rock
