Fair Lawn-Saddle Brook Follows: The 2011 Pipe Bomb

Around 11 p.m. on the night of June 5, 2011, a pipe bomb filled with black powder and small nails exploded outside a Hunter Place home, raining debris on neighboring homes and parked cars.

Almost two years later, the case remains unsolved, Detective Lt. Michael Uttel said. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office handled the case, but kept Fair Lawn police in the loop about its progress. Despite performing what Uttel described as a "crazy amount of follow-up" that even extended out of state, authorities never developed a suspect, he said.

While fragments of the pipe bomb struck neighboring houses and cars, Bergen County prosecutor John Molinelli said the explosion originated at 18-11 Hunter Place. Authorities believe the home, owned by Emilia and James Duffy, according to tax records, was the intended target of the attack.

Uttel said a resident of the targeted home had at one time allegedly been involved with an outlaw motorcycle gang, but that they were no longer affiliated with the gang at the time of the incident.

Authorities believe the resident's alleged past gang affiliation prompted the attack.

"There's no other explanation for it," Uttel said.
