Six Candidates Seek Three Fair Lawn School Board Seats

Three seats up for election on the Fair Lawn Board of Education have drawn six candidates this year.

Three current board members — Michael Rosenberg, Mary Wallace and Cindy Jo Quackenbush — are running for re-election as a team. 

Rosenberg has been on the board for six years and president for two years. He is a teacher in Hillsdale, a life member of Fair Lawn Rescue Squad, Boy Scout leader and member of historic preservation commission.

Wallace has been on the board for nine years, was a teacher in Fair Lawn for 29 years and taught at Montclair University.

Quackenbush has been on the board for six years and been vice president for the past two years.

All three of the current board members said they hoped to continue working toward full-day kindergarten. 

Ron Barbarulo, a former board member for one term who has also volunteered as a PTA rep and coach, is also seeking to rejoin the board. He said he wanted to get students more involved with the community, help improve the district's buildings and grounds, restore music programs and bring in more technology while seeking out more shared services to save money.

Also seeking seats are newcomers Vinko Grskovic and Ofelia Ramos, parents with a boy entering schools who said they didn't feel represented by current board members.

Grskovic works in technology and said he wanted to help bring more tech into the district, with a 3D printer for students to use and helping to make the board itself more transparent by making meeting minutes and videos available online.

Ramos, an ESL department supervisor in Paterson, also said she wanted to bring in more technology and would like to pursue shared services like offering AP courses to students from other area districts.

The election is Tuesday.
