Flemington: A Charming Town Rich In History And Culture
Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Flemington so special.

Flemington is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Flemington has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- The borough of Flemington was named after Samuel Fleming, a colonial landowner who purchased the land in the early 1700s. Originally an agricultural town, the 1800s brought industrialization to Flemington and the city continued to grow and prosper in the 1900s.
- Flemington was home to one of the most famous trials in American history: the Lindbergh baby kidnapping trial. In 1935, Bruno Hauptmann was tried and convicted for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh's infant son. Today, visitors can tour the Hunterdon County Courthouse where the trial took place and see the original courtroom and exhibits.
- Flemington is also home to several historic houses, including the Samuel Fleming House, which dates back to the 18th century. The house is now a museum and features exhibits on Flemington's early history.
- One of the town's most popular events is the Flemington Opa! Greek Festival, held every June. Visitors can enjoy Greek food, music and dance, as well as children's activities and vendors selling traditional Greek goods.
- Flemington is known for its many antique shops, which can be found throughout the city. The annual Flemington Fine Artisans Show is also a popular event that features over 40 local artisans and their handmade crafts.
- Flemington is known for its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. The event takes place in the heart of downtown Flemington and features live music, food vendors and of course, the lighting of the tree.
- Flemington is home to the Hunterdon County Library, which offers a wide range of books, magazines and other resources for all ages. The library also hosts various vents and programs throughout the year, including author talks and storytime for kids.
- Train enthusiasts will love Flemington's Northlandz model train exhibit, which features over 100 trains traveling through a vast miniature landscape. Visitors can explore the exhibit's 52,000 square feet of model train tracks, buildings and landscapes.
- The Flemington Jewish Community Center, located in the heart of downtown, is a hub for Jewish cultural events and activities. The center hosts concerts, lectures and holiday celebrations, as well as offering classes and workshops on Jewish history and traditions.
- Schaefer Farms is a working farm in Flemington that offers a variety of seasonal activities for visitors. In the fall, the farm hosts a popular corn maze, hayrides and pumpkin picking, while in the summer, visitors can enjoy fresh produce and other farm-fresh treats.
- The Stangl Pottery Factory, a now-closed factory originally based in Flemington, is now a historic site that features shops, restaurants and artist studios. Visitors can see the original kilns and other pottery-making equipment, as well as shop for unique handmade items.
- The Hunterdon County Historical Society, headquartered in Flemington, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Hunterdon County. The society operates several historic sites in the area, including the Doric House Museum.
