Free Summer Concerts In Fort Lee

A quick look at five upcoming free musical performances in town, starting with "Rocksplosion" tonight at the Fort Lee Community Center.

On Tuesday, “5 Things” took a look at five—well, seven—upcoming free movie screenings in Fort Lee this summer.

Today, we turn to music. And while the following highlighted performances may not rival U2 at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, there are plenty of rock acts, among other musical genres, coming even closer to home and for free.

Rocksplosion – July 20 (Yes, that’s tonight!) at 7:30 p.m.

This act describes itself as “the rock star tribute show for the hip, baby-boomer and ‘Gen-X’ crowd, the biggest rock stars of each decade are portrayed by the best impersonators we know.”

The self-described “rock tribute impersonators” have taken on the stage personas of everyone from Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, Rod Stewart, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Santana, Meatloaf, Elton John, Billy Joel, David Lee Roth, John Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osborne, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffet and Kurt Cobain, to Madonna and Britney Spears.

Ring of Fire – July 30 at 7 p.m.

Michael Patrick's band from central New Jersey and is an offshoot of the country-rock group, The Suburban Hillbillies.

“While the original band continues to tour locally, its members have put together this special project—a tribute show to honor and pay homage to one of their musical icons: Mr. Johnny Cash.”

Little Paradise – August 6 at 7 p.m.

This band, formed in 2010, touts itself as “The most authentic Pat Benatar tribute show,” “the closest you'll get to the real thing” and “a must see for any Benatar fan.”

“I never took vocal lessons,” says lead singer Cathy DaPrato on the band’s website. “I would just sing along every day to Pat's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and CRIMES OF PASSION albums. Those were my vocal lessons.”

Mahoney Brothers Jukebox Heroes Show – August 27 at 7 p.m.

Another rock and country musical icon impersonation show, these guys have The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson, Rick Nelson, Neil Diamond and Garth Brooks, among others, among others, in their repertoire.

The Duprees – August 31 at 7:30 p.m.

This quartet, which takes back to the early 1960s, takes on Joni James, Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford and Nat King Cole songs set to Glenn Miller-like, 1940s arrangements.

Known for “their romantic interpretations of some of the most beautiful love songs ever written,” according to their website, “[The Duprees] have made a career out of giving new life to old hits.”
