No Kiddie Pool Removal Update, Candidates Night and Essay Contest

Following up on yesterday's column, About Town from the Reached out to the Parks Department

About Town contacted the Fort Lee Parks Department to find out the reason why Coytesville Park Kiddie Pool had been paved over and why Westview Park kiddie pool appeared to be next. At the time of publication, we have not yet been able to speak with Parks Department Supervisor, Tony Lione, about why the pool(s) are being removed, but as soon as we do, you’ll be the first to know.

Board of Education Candidates Night Tonight

Tonight the Fort Lee Homeowners Association will host a Board of Education Candidates Night at the Middle School on Stillwell Ave. at 7:30 p.m. Speaking at Candidates Night are incumbents Peter Suh, Joseph Surace and Michelle Stux-Ramirez, and three first-time candidates Paul Umrichin, Tracy Mattei and Helen Yoon. The school board election will be held on April 27. Come and hear the candidates’ speak about our schools.

Calling All High School Students: Gilda’s Club Wants Your Story

From now until May 2, Gilda’s Club of Hackensack is sponsoring its second annual “It’s Always Something” teen essay contest. If you are a cancer survivor or have helped a family member or friend deal with cancer, your story deserves to be heard. Gilda’s Club wants to know how you learned to live with cancer in your life.

The teen essay contest is open to any high school student (grades 9-12) in the community who has either had cancer themselves, had a family member or friend with cancer or lost a family member or friend to cancer. Teens are encouraged to write an engaging, heartfelt essay that focuses on the impact cancer has had on their lives.

Essay and completed contest entry form must be submitted by email no later than 5 p.m. Monday, May 2, or by regular mail by Friday, April 29. The essay must be typed, double spaced and no more than 1,000 words. Finalist essays will be read by a panel of celebrity judges that includes Deirdre Imus, Children’s Health Advocate, Lori Stokes, Eyewitness News Anchor, and Jeff Feagles, Former New York Giant.

First prize is a laptop computer. The second place winner receives an iPod and $50 iTunes gift card. The third place winner receives an iPod, and for honorable mention, you will receive a $100 gift card.

An awards ceremony and reception for all entrants will be held at Gilda’s Club NNJ in Hackensack on Wednesday, May 18 from 7 to 8 p.m.
