Weekend Overnight Lane Closures at GWB to Continue Through August

The lane upper-level lane closures were scheduled to begin Friday and will continue through August

Three of the four eastbound upper-level approach lanes to the George Washington Bridge will be closed during weekend overnight hours through August for resurfacing of the bridge, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Fort Lee councilman Harvey Sohmer also mentioned the closures, which began Friday, in his council report at last week’s Mayor and Council meeting, beginning by saying, β€œI hate to break this to Fort Lee.”

The upper level lanes will be closed weekly from 10 p.m. Fridays to 10 a.m. Saturdays and from 10 a.m. Saturdays to 10 a.m. Sundays.

β€œSo this is a long time,” Sohmer said. β€œI would plan accordingly. If you have to take an alternate route, then we’ve got to do that, because the bridge is here in Fort Lee.”

In addition, two lower-level westbound lanes of the Trans-Manhattan Expressway will be closed during the same hours through July, according to the Port Authority.

The weekend work will be cancelled in the event of rain, the Port Authority said in a statement, which read in part, β€œThe rehabilitation projects are part of the Port Authority's capital investment in the bridge helping to ensure safe and efficient travel across the bridge and keep it in a state of good repair.”

The Port Authority suggests the Lincoln and Holland tunnels as alternate routes, although that may be of little comfort to Fort Lee’s late-night or early-morning, weekend motorists.
