What’s Your Reaction To The National Debt Deal?

Some from Fort Lee weighed in on the debate last week; now we want to know what you think after Sunday's agreement in Washington, where default was seemingly averted

The President and Congressional leaders reportedly reached agreement on the framework for a budget deal late Sunday that would cut trillions of dollars in federal spending over the next 10 years, pave the way for an increase in the government’s debt ceiling and seemingly avoid potential default, the New York Times and other media outlets were reporting Monday morning.

Last week, as Washington struggled to reach a compromise in the debt ceiling debate, Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich and others weighed in on what would have happened if the situation were not resolved.

Reactions by Patch readers followed. Among them were the following:

  • “Most of the citizens of Fort Lee will not be impacted to a great degree.”
  • “We Must be a conservative fiscal country; No More Massive spending.”
  • “The economic crisis has made Fort Lee residents much more aware of what’s going on in town – empty storefronts, scores of for sale signs, political cronyism, escalating municipal budgets and taxes, needless lawsuits, etc.”
  • “I like that [Sokolich] understands that individuals such as himself can praise and recognize leadership in others like Christie and Cuomo of both political parties. I like the way the mayor is able to see the bigger picture when he speaks.”

But just because the U.S. seemingly avoided a debt default doesn’t necessarily mean the country avoided a debt downgrade. We’ll know more in the coming days.

In the meantime, we want to know what you think. What’s your reaction to the agreement reached in Washington Sunday? Are you relieved that the national debt debate seems to be over, at least for now? Are you satisfied with how it turned out? Are there winners and losers here, and if so, who won, and who lost? And most importantly, what does this all mean for Fort Lee?
