Joseph "Joe" C. Schoenenberger, 82, of Wheaton, IL, formerly of Bolingbrook, IL, and Freehold, NJ, passed away on Thursday February 27, 2025

Joseph “Joe” C. Schoenenberger, 82, of Wheaton, IL, formerly of Bolingbrook, IL, and Freehold, NJ, passed away on Thursday February 27, 2025. He was born on March 17, 1942, in Queens, NY, to Joseph C. Schoenenberger and Veronica (nee Cote).

Loving father of Laura (Jeff) Irick and Christian R. Schoenenberger. Adored grandfather of Joseph (Emily)Doan, Sarah (Steven) Staley, Elias (Anna) Irick, and Madison Schoenenberger. Devoted great grandfather of Charlie Whipple, Gavin Doan and Deliah Stanley. Brother of Peter (Claire) Schoenenberger. Joe also leaves behind many friends and extended family members- especially his beloved nieces and nephews.

Joe grew up in Queens, NY, in Floral Park. On March 17, 1960, Joe joined the Airforce and served as a communications specialist in Germany. After four years Joe left the air force to pursue his education. Joe attended The University of Kentucky in Lexington where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology. He continued his education at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL, where he earned his masters and PHD in Clinical Psychology.

Joe worked as a clinical psychologist for over 25 years at Rush Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago. Joe retired early in 1996 and moved back home to New Jersey to spend more time with his family.

Professionally in the late 1970’s, Joe led the campaign by the American heart and lung association to educate the public about the hazards of smoking. He was featured on the morning talk show “Donahue” and did many commercials with the Chicago Blackhawks to stop the start of and end of smoking.

Personally, in Joe’s free time he loved building model train sets, loved bowling as a former PBA senior tour competitor and his biggest passion was fishing.

The Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Friedrich Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville IL, 60540. The Burial with Military Honors will be on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 10:30 AM Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, 20953 W Hoff Rd, Elwood, IL 60421. Arrangements entrusted to Friedrich Jones Funeral Home.
