Watch Out For Phone Scam, Monmouth County Prosecutor Warns
Authorities are urging residents to watch out for callers impersonating a member of the prosecutor's office investigative staff.
FREEHOLD, NJ — Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago is warning residents to watch out for phone scammers impersonating a member of the prosecutor’s office investigative staff.
According to Santiago, the caller is leaving phone messages asking for callbacks and seeking information regarding what they describe as a “fraudulent situation.”
Recipients of the message include multiple local social workers, authorities said.

If you receive a call from someone purporting to be a member of law enforcement, authorities recommend:
- If you pick up the call, immediately request a land-line number and extension/email contact, then contact that officer/detective at the phone number listed for that agency and request to be connected to him/her;
- If not, do NOT respond to a voicemail (unless they leave a land-line number and extension/email contact); and
- Do NOT provide any personal information or make any payments without confirming the caller’s identity.
“With regard to any suspected scam, always use your best judgment,” Santiago said. “If it doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.”
