Atlantic City Aquarium Sets March Opening Date

When the Atlantic City Aquarium reopens, it will have been five years since its initial, temporary closure.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — An official reopening date of March 24 has been set for the Atlantic City Aquarium, five full years after its initial and temporary closure.

Mayor Marty Small Sr. announced the date during his State of the City address this week, along with several other new projects in Atlantic City.

He said he would take "full responsibility" for the delay. The Atlantic City Aquarium was first said to be reopening this past July. Then, that date was pushed back to September. In September, Small said it would open in December. And in December, it was announced that the aquarium would reopen in the new year.

Initially, the closure in March 2020 was supposed to be temporary. The pandemic drew out the closure as officials worked on much-needed improvements, with delays in the supply chain causing issues.

Also, once work started, it was quickly realized that the damage and repairs needed were much greater than previously thought. The combination of these two factors meant that the renovation schedule was delayed.
