Controlled burning is conducted during cooler months to eliminate underbrush and leaf litter. It decreases the likelihood of more serious fires and stimulates new forest growth.
Controlled burns are weather permitting. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service requires three consecutive days without precipitation prior to conducting a controlled burn. Wind conditions and humidity must also be favorable.
