GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer faces two challenges in this fall's elections, from Republican Joseph Damico and Restore GT candidate Sam Sweet.

Patch asked each candidate to complete a questionnaire outlining biographical information, their platform and their stands on a handful of issues. Patch will run profiles using these responses in the months leading up to Election Day on Nov. 2.

Family
David and his wife, Michelle, the Surrogate of Camden County, have five children and live in the Sicklerville section of Gloucester Township.

Education
David earned a B.A. in Psychology from Rutgers-Camden, a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration, Rutgers-Camden, and a Law Degree from Rutgers School of Law-Camden. He has been teaching courses in political science, public administration and public policy at Camden County College, Rutgers-Camden and Rowan Universities.

Occupation
David currently serves as Director of Government Affairs for New Jersey American Water. He also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Chamber of Commerce Southern New Jersey and is a member of the Rowan University/ Rutgers Camden Board of Governors.

Previous or Current Elected or Appointed Office
David R. Mayer was elected Mayor of Gloucester Township in November 2009, sworn in on January 2, 2010, and re-elected in 2013 and 2017.

Why are you seeking elective office?

On their campaign website, Team Mayer says, “We are here to create more jobs, invest in our youth, and keep our community safe. We have the experience to continue to move Gloucester Township in the right direction and get things done.”

What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?

Since taking office, David has worked on improving the Township’s finances and stabilizing taxes. He introduced six budgets which each held the line on the municipal tax rate and implemented many sustainable and green initiatives. He promoted new community policing initiatives and significantly enhanced economic development opportunities, including the recently opened Gloucester Township Premium Outlets – one of the largest economic development projects in the South Jersey region.
