Neighbors Evacuated As Garage Goes Up In Flames In Gloucester Twp.

Heavy fire hollowed out the detached garage as thick smoke billowed in the neighborhood.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Neighbors were evacuated as a garage went up in flames Monday evening in Gloucester Township.

The detached garage fire emerged around 6:45 p.m. on 76 Kelly Driver Rd. in the township's Chews Landing section.

Heavy fire hollowed out the garage as thick smoke billowed in the residential neighborhood.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution, police said.

Firefighters from throughout the township and surrounding towns flocked to the scene and put out the blaze.

The fire was quickly placed under control. But crews stayed on-location until around 1 a.m. to fully extinguish it and clear the scene, according to the Chews Landing Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, according to the Blackwood Fire Company.

The cause of the fire was unknown as of Monday night. The Camden County fire marshal and Gloucester Township police are investigating.

Gloucester Township police urged residents to take fire-safety precautions.

"Smoke alarms are a key component of any fire escape plan. When there is smoke, there is fire, which can spread quickly.
