Police Offer Advice with Flooding Possible

Keep yourself and loved ones safe by following these suggestions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is calling for more than 2 inches of rain to fall on the Blackwood area today and early Friday.

The NWS-Mount Holly station predicts between a quarter- and half-inch of rain will fall this afternoon, with heavy rainfall at times. The afternoon rain will be followed by 1 to 2 inches of heavy rain overnight, with showers possible Friday morning.

Thunderstorms are possible through tonight.

Flooding is highly possible across the Delaware Valley, where some locations could receive as much as 4 inches of rain from this system, according to NWS.

Gloucester Township Police ask area residents to follow these suggestions to avoid being endangered by potential flooding:

* Leave early to avoid being marooned on flooded roads;

* Make sure you have enough fuel in your car in the event you are detoured by flooding;

* Follow recommended routes—no sightseeing;

* Monitor local radio broadcasts for weather updates;

* Watch for washed-out roadways and downed wires and tree limbs or branches;

* Navigate areas prone to flash flooding, such as highway dips, bridges and low-lying areas near rivers or streams, slowly and with caution;

* Do not attempt to drive through a flooded roadway—turn around and take a safer route;

* Do not underestimate the power of flood waters;

* Abandon your vehicle immediately if flood waters begin rapidly rising around it and entering its passenger cabin.
