The false post advised anyone with immigration 'issues' to stay inside, police said.

LINDENWOLD, NJ — Rumors of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers operating in a Camden County town are a hoax, according to local police.

A "fraudulent message" on social media claimed that ICE was conducting enforcement activity in Lindenwold, police said Tuesday. The post advised people with immigration "issues" to stay inside.

The message is false, according to the Lindenwold Police Department.

"There is no validity to this message," the department said in a statement. "Lindenwold police is unaware of any I.C.E. activity nor are we participating in any type of detail."

ICE's regional spokespersons haven't returned comment to Patch as of this writing.

Lindenwold police advised the public to refer to their social media pages and website for verified information in the borough.

A state mandate prohibits all law enforcement under New Jersey's umbrella from assisting with investigations based solely on a person's immigration status.
