Teacher's Profane Rant Sparks Outrage At South Jersey School District

WINSLOW TWP., NJ — A teacher's classroom rant to her high school students was demeaning and culturally insensitive, say some members of a South Jersey school community.

Video reviewed by Patch contains some of Winslow Township High School teacher's comments, recorded by a high school boy in class.

"My ears are bleeding from the moment I step into this (expletive deleted) school to the moment I leave it," the teacher is heard saying to students over about three minutes of video.

"It is a (expletive deleted) zoo in this class. Every day."

Parents and students planned to gather outside the high school Tuesday to call for the teacher to be fired and a suspended student reinstated, said Rev. Kevin McCall, a civil rights activist based in Brooklyn.

McCall said the student was suspended for four days after he recorded the video, which he shared with his parents.

"No teacher should ever talk to a student like this," the parent's father said in a social media post.

Winslow Township Schools superintendent Dr. H. Major Poteat said the district could not comment on personnel and student matters in an email for Patch.

A press conference was planned for noon Tuesday outside the high school with Black Lives Matter of NY & NJ scheduled to be there, McCall said.

"In the middle of Black History Month you have no regard to the culture you are in," McCall said in a statement. "We are calling for this teacher to be fired immediately and for (the student) to be reinstated. We send our kids to school to learn not to be cussed at and called names.”
