14-Year-Old Set Brush Fire: Hackettstown Police

The brush fire happened at the end of March in an empty lot, police said.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ — A 14-year-old was charged with arson after setting a brush fire, Hackettstown police.

The teen is accused of lighting the lot behind the vacant CVS on fire the night of March 29, police said. According to police, the teen used a lighter to set the grass on fire, and then tried to put it out. When the teen failed, they ran away.

The fire grew to the size of about five feet by ten feet. No one was hurt and no structures were damaged.

The teen was arrested on April 25 and charged with third-degree arson. They were released to a family member with an upcoming court date.

Police did not release the teen's name or gender.
