HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ — McMillan's Bakery has permanently closed, finishing an 86-year run with one final line out the door clamoring for its cream doughnuts and sweet treats one last time.

The McMillan family ran the Haddon Township bakery for several generations, starting with George and Evelyn founding it in 1939.

A line of customers extended down the sidewalk before 5 a.m. Sunday — hours before the bakery opened for its final day.

Despite a bittersweet end to an era, the McMillan family says they shuttered the store on their own terms.

"We've had many offers to buy our beloved business, but our Matriarch insisted that our family business end with our family," McMillan's said Friday on Facebook. "She was clear that she did not want our name or our legacy to be carried on by anyone outside our fourth-generation family."

In October, McMillan's announced that the bakery would close, confirming speculation after the building on 15 Haddon Ave. was listed for sale.

The announcement came a year after the death of Arline C. Biemiller — George and Evelyn McMillan's eldest daughter, who spearheaded the business after taking over for her parents.

Biemiller was "the glue that held our family business together," McMillan's says. Her children and grandchildren carried on the family legacy after her death in November 2023. She was 85.

McMillan's was known for their cream doughnuts, snowflake rolls and other sweets, often getting lines out the door during the holiday season.

As McMillan's closed, several people shared fond memories in the comments of the bakery's Facebook page.

"Your bakery was a staple in our family gatherings growing up," one commenter said. "Birthday cakes, tea biscuits, cupcakes, snowflake rolls, cinnamon buns and creme donuts. I recently took my grandmother there to get some tea biscuits and the smell alone took me back to my childhood."

"The best cream donuts ever!" said another commenter. "My father used to go there on Sunday morning after Mass to get our donuts and tea biscuits."

"In recent years, every time I'd bite into one of your creme donuts it allowed me to time travel into the past and revisit those moments I'd cherished with loved ones from life," another person said. "Your baked goods were such a foundational pillar in those days of nostalgia and my world won’t be the same without you."
