HADDONFIELD, NJ — Last week's fire in Haddonfield upended several residents' lives, killing pets, destroying belongings and leaving multiple families without a home just days before Thanksgiving, according to one of the victims.

Twelve condos were deemed uninhabitable after Thursday morning's fire at Haddonfield Commons. The building's architect, who also lost his apartment in the blaze, generated a GoFundMe campaign for the displaced families.

"Although insurance policies are in place, there is an immediate need to cover temporary housing costs, replace household objects, and cover deductibles," said Eduardo Guzman, who started the GoFundMe.

At least two families lost all their possessions, one of whom lost their beloved pets, Guzman said. One couple lost their home due to water damage, while another displaced family had just to Haddonfield from out-of-state. Others have family members who need home care, Guzman said.

The GoFundMe has generated about $15,000 as of early Monday afternoon, with a $22,000 goal set. But Guzman hopes they can surpass the goal.

A portion of proceeds will support Haddon Fire Company No. 1, which led the firefighting response, "as appreciation for their heroic actions," Guzman said.

The fire emerged from the rear of the second floor just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday. Photos from the scene show heavy flames roaring out of two sets of windows at the Haddon Avenue building.

Firefighters contained the blaze, leaving most of the building untouched. But 12 condos were deemed uninhabitable because of smoke and water damage.

No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation as of Monday. But it doesn't appear suspicious, according to the Camden County Fire Marshal's Office.
