Heights Students Honor Dr. King By Serving Others

Every year the high school's multicultural club students work together to celebrate and live out the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King.

This year the students focused their efforts on spreading the message of Dr. King with their younger peers visiting the students at both Euclid and Lincoln schools, talking to them about the importance of celebrating diversity and how his work has made the world a better a place.

Although Martin Luther King Day is observed on Monday, Jan. 21 his actual birthday is Jan. 15 and the students decided to spend Tuesday honoring his message, said teacher Lauren Czekaj, the club's advisor. The students work to serve on King day making it a day on, not a day off, she explained.

The students who all represent different cultures began the day gathered in the high school cafeteria enjoying breakfast together as a group, just as Dr. Martin Luther King had done. Then they set off to visit the elementary schools where they split into smaller groups to talk to the younger students in all the grades.

Danny Acosta, Thomas Nicoletti, Arashjot Sharma and Jayen Patel spoke to the students in Mrs. Lambe's second grade class at Euclid about the powerful message Dr. King made in his "I am a dream" speech.

"We are all better for what Martin Luther King did," Acosta told the students pointing that had it not been for his message the world may not be what it's like today with all different cultures interacting together.
