HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — In an effort to improve safety, Somerset County will be reducing the number of lanes on Amwell Road (County Route 514) from four to two in Hillsborough.

Somerset County will be repaving Amwell Road between Route 206 and Beekman Lane, said Mayor John Ciccarelli at the Tuesday night Township Committee meeting.

"This will improve safety by reducing the number of lanes from four to two," said Ciccarelli.

Ciccarelli said the project will begin just beyond the high school and continue all the way out toward Beekman Lane.

Additionally, a center island will be constructed along with bike shoulders.

"It's called a road diet," said Ciccarelli.

The center island will give pedestrians a safe zone in the middle of the road when they are trying to cross.

"There is a spot in the middle where they can stand without having to worry about getting hit by a car, frankly," said Ciccarelli.

Currently, the County is working on handicap ramps and traffic signal modification.

Construction on the road diet is expected to begin in November.
