Car Crashes Into Millstone River, Driver Charged With Underage DWI
Firefighters rescued the driver and passenger from the partially submerged vehicle in the river on Wednesday night.
MONTGOMERY, NJ — A woman was charged with underage driving while intoxicated after crashing into the Millstone River on Wednesday night, said Montgomery Police Lt. Jason Larsen.
At 8:50 p.m., Montgomery Police, Montgomery Fire Companies 1 and 2, Montgomery EMS and Griggstown Fire Company went to River Road at the Belle Mead-Griggstown Road intersection for a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle that drove through the guardrail into the Millstone River.
The vehicle was partially submerged; however, the occupants were not seriously injured, said Larsen.

Firefighters were able to rescue the driver, identified as Sophia Cifelli, 20, of East Brunswick, and an adult passenger.
While speaking with Cifelli about the crash, police officers determined Cifelli had drunk alcoholic beverages before driving the vehicle, said Larsen.

Cifelli was arrested for underage driving while intoxicated.
Cifelli and the passenger were taken by Montgomery EMS to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick for an evaluation due to the crash.
A preliminary investigation found that Cifelli was driving east on Belle Mead-Griggstown Road and
didn't stop at the intersection of River Road.
Cifelli’s vehicle drove across River Road, hitting the guard rail and coming to rest in the Millstone River, according to the investigation.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional motor vehicle charges are pending.
