Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For Somerset County

Severe thunderstorms were spotted heading toward southern Somerset County with 60 mph wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for the southern part of Somerset County on Friday.

The warning is until 10:30 a.m. for areas such as Somerset, Hillsborough, and Somerville, according to the National Weather Service(NWS).

At 9:41 a.m., severe thunderstorms were seen along a line extending from near Hopewell to Magnolia, moving east at 60 mph.

The storms have 60 mph wind gusts, which could cause damage to roofs, siding, trees, and power lines.

"For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. This severe thunderstorm may contain little or no lightning. Do not wait until you hear thunder before taking cover," according to the NWS.

A Wind Advisory also remains in effect through 1 a.m. on Saturday for all of Somerset County.

Here is a look at the upcoming weekend forecast:

Friday: Rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 3 p.m., then a slight chance of rain between 3 and 4 p.m. The temperature is expected to fall to around 41 by 5 p.m. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 24. West wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 40 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. West wind around 5 mph.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 27. South wind around 5 mph.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 45. West wind 5 to 15 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 22.
