HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — The Hillsborough Township High School Girls Wrestling team is making history as the high school's first team.

The district is also creating a Girls Wrestling Head Coach position, "so that we can start a girls wrestling team in the next school year," said Marini.

The position was unanimously approved by the board.

"I think this is a tremendous opportunity. Over the past few years, we have seen increased interest in girls wanting to wrestle. We have handled that by having them participate with the boys' wrestling team, but we now see that there is going to be interest levels where a full-time wrestling coach is needed. Girls' wrestling has exploded in NJ and we are happy to be a part of this initiative," said Supeintendent Michael Volpe to Patch.

The idea to form the team was brought to Volpe's attention by both community members and Mike Davis.

Volpe has a background in wrestling. He was the GMCWCA Coach of the Year in 2001 and coached a state champion for JFK High School in Iselin. Volpe then volunteered as a wrestling coach for several years in the Hillsborough Recreation program.

"As an old wrestler and long-time wrestling coach myself, I was thrilled to be supportive," said Volpe.
