Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Event Planned In Hillsborough

Residents can safely dispose of harmful household items on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Garage.

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Somerset County’s recycling division is sponsoring its Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off event so residents can safely dispose of harmful items, county officials announced. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the South County Public Works Garage, which is located at 410 Roycefield Rd. in Hillsborough.

“I encourage residents to take advantage of this free event,” said Somerset County Freeholder Melonie Marano, recycling liaison. “This is an opportunity to safely rid your home of toxic items that have accumulated, which can contain chemicals that may threaten your family’s health and the community as a whole.”

Social Distancing Guidelines
Residents must wear facial coverings and stay in their vehicles with the windows rolled up. Materials should be stored in residents’ trunk, cargo area or truck bed and also easily accessible to the staff who will remove it from the vehicle.

Proof of Residency

Residents must be prepared to show a current driver's license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. Businesses or commercial vehicles are not allowed.

Household Hazardous Waste Accepted at the Drop-Off Event
Banned or outdated pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, motor oil (five-gallon maximum), fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs, ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, mercury switches, oil-based paints, pool chemicals, propane tanks and rechargeable and button-cell batteries.

DO NOT drop off tires, or electronics (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas cylinders, or smoke detectors. Air conditioners and dehumidifiers will NOT be accepted.
