Township Committee: Parking Still Outlawed on Snow Covered Hillsborough Streets

The Committee issued a reminder to residents that vehicles parked on snow covered streets are subject to towing and summonses.

The Hillsborough Township Committee has issued a reminder stating that parking is still outlawed on all snow covered streets.

Township ordinances state that vehicles parked on snow-covered streets are subject to summonses and could be towed at the owner’s expense, Township Committeewoman Gloria McCauley explained in an email message Tuesday afternoon.

The “historic” blizzard dropped far less snow than expected on the township, with only 4 to 8 inches falling on Somerset County Monday night, and less than inch stacking up in Hillsborough Tuesday.

Schedule XVI (§ 143-45) of the Township Code mandates: whenever snow has fallen and the accumulation is such that it covers the street or highway an emergency shall exist, and no vehicle shall be parked on either side of any of the streets or parts thereof.

“It is necessary to have the streets accessible and free from vehicles parked on the side to allow for the plows to complete their work,” McCauley stated. “When snow is anticipated, use off street parking as an alternative.”

The above parking prohibitions shall remain in effect after the snow has ceased until the streets have been plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic, the officials stated.

Hillsborough Chief of Police, Chief Kaminsky also stated that motorists are required by law to make sure that all snow and ice are cleared from a vehicle before heading out on the road.

“This is to avoid flying ice and snow, which can potentially cause visibility problems for other drivers,” stated Committeewoman McCauley.

Additionally, snow should not be shoveled, thrown nor deposited in the roadway from sidewalks and driveways.

“When clearing sidewalks and driveways, please pile snow on the side of the driveway and do not throw it in the street,” Committeewoman McCauley stated.
