HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A dog died earlier this week after being left in the snow in downtown Jersey City, and now a Hudson County animal nonprofit is offering a reward.

According to the Liberty Humane Society — which is based in Jersey City and has contracts with that city and Hoboken — just after midnight on Monday, Jan. 31, the LHS Animal Response Team received a call about an abandoned dog. They found the animal at the intersection of Grand and Monmouth streets in downtown Jersey City.

"The dog was lying in a snowbank, hypothermic and unable to move," the organization said. "It was 9 degrees at the time."

When asked if the dog could have been a stray, a spokesperson said, "We know the dog was abandoned because he was found with a blanket. He was also unable to walk and we suspect he was in distress before he was left in the snow — otherwise he would have gotten up and walked away."

The ART (Animal Response Team) rushed the dog to an emergency veterinarian, but he could not be stabilized and died while undergoing overnight care, the group said.

"This was a horrible act of cruelty," they said.

The team is seeking the public’s help in identifying this dog or anyone involved in his care or abandonment. They are offering a $500 reward for information that leads to successful prosecution of those responsible.

The LHS ART has referred the situation to the Jersey City Police Department.

"Many of you have asked what happens when animal cruelty or neglect is suspected or documented," they noted. "While the LHS ART is the agency providing animal control service for Jersey City and Hoboken, and often the first on the scene of a suspected animal welfare issue, we are not authorized to formally investigate or prosecute animal cruelty or neglect. We must document and refer our findings to local police departments."

The LHS Animal Response Team can be reached at 201-547-4888.
