City Sends Out Flood Warning

It's raining again

Strap on those rain boots and get your car out of the flood prone areas. Here are some tips from the City. City spokesman Paul Drexel announced that the area at Ninth and Grand Streets is flooded.

As a result of the weather forecast for heavy rain in our area and potential flooding, the City of Hoboken is providing free parking in a municipal garage this Monday, March 29thbeginning at 8 p.m. until Tuesday, March 30th at 8 a.m. Residents who reside in flood prone areas with a valid residency parking permit will be able to park in Garage B (located on 2nd Street between Hudson and River streets).

DO NOT under any circumstances ignore the barriers that are erected to close  flooded streets during an emergency. It is dangerous and against the law. The barriers are erected for the safety of the public. When flooding occurs it can cause manhole covers to be dislodged and this creates a very dangerous situation where a person may be pulled into an open sewer and drown. Hoboken Fire Captain Michael Stefano, while attempting to assist a driver who had ignored the closed street barrier and became stuck in his car in flood waters, was nearly pulled into an open sewer. Captain Stefano was fortunate to not have been hurt badly, but his incident is a reminder to all individuals that ignoring street closure barriers not only puts those people in a car at risk, but also public safety personnel.  Attached is a list of areas already flooded today and other flood prone areas of the City.

Wind Advisory

High winds and heavy rain are expected in Hoboken tonight (Monday, March 29th) through tomorrow morning. Be sure your property (including construction sites) is secure.

Bring in unsecured objects from patios and balconies and secure outdoor objects such as lawn furniture or garbage cans that could blow away and cause damage or injury.

Report downed lines to 201-420-2007 (Hoboken Fire Department) or 911 for assistance. Do not try to free lines or to remove debris yourself.

Avoid anything that may be touching downed lines, including vehicles or tree branches. Puddles and even wet or snow-covered ground can conduct electricity in some cases. Warn others to stay away.
