Former Hoboken Superintendent Of Schools Dies

Hoboken's former superintendent of schools has died at 99.

HOBOKEN, NJ — Walter Fine, Hoboken's superintendent of schools during a time of transition, died last month at age 99.

Fine had served in the Navy during World War II, went to college using the GI Bill, and became a teacher in town.

During his 39 years in the district, according to his obituary, he became principal of Hoboken High School, and eventually superintendent in the 1980s, the period of Hoboken's gentrification. He married another teacher, Mary Burke.

"He spoke.. with great fondness and smiled while recalling his former students, even long after retirement," His obit said.

This week, former high school reading supervisor Dennis Sevano said, "I had the pleasure of working with him, providing keen insight when things went right and when adjustments were needed — a teacher, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent. His late wife was an effective primary grade teacher at Brandt Elementary School."
