HOBOKEN, NJ — Ever since one of Hoboken's beloved family Italian bakeries—Giorgio's—closed in 2021 after 47 years in business, other tenants have floated ideas for the space, but nothing came to fruition.

The promise of a specialty ice cream shop came and went in summer 2022.

But new tenants were seen fixing up the space this week, and the business owner told Patch exactly what she plans to do.

As the pet population grows in the mile-square city, Kylene Austin will be opening up a dog grooming spot and dog treat bakery in the location, on the 1100 block of Washington Street.

"We hope to honor the history of the building by creating a warm and joyful space for pets and everyone in the neighborhood," she said this week.

She'll be opening a location of Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming, she said. The chain has locations in Edgewater and throughout the area.

She estimated they'll open in summer.

Giorgio's bakery — which opened in 1974 — closed in 2021.

The store was one of the last two longtime family-owned bakeries in Hoboken, the other being Carlo's City Hall Bakery 11 blocks south — made famous by owner Buddy Valastro's TV show, "Cake Boss." At one time, there were 19 Italian bakeries in the mile-square city.

Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming will be located at 1112 Washington St.
