Free Disaster Assistance Program Serves Local Sandy Victims

Families still struggling to pick up the pieces after Superstorm Sandy are invited to attend the first session of a free biweekly disaster assistance program at the Shipyard this Thursday where a crisis expert will be on hand to guide participants in getting the help they need to recover from the storm.

The program, which is part of a larger six-month Community Outreach Program administered by the Hoboken Historical Museum in partnership with the United Way of Hudson County, is open to any adult with children who is still struggling with the effects of Sandy. The first session will be on the topic of speaking to children about disasters.

Dawn Donnelly, a licensed disaster relief crisis counselor, will lead Thursday’s session, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the conference room of the Shipyard’s Independence Building, located on 12th Street at the corner of Shipyard Lane.

Subsequent sessions — the next one is Nov. 7 — will be held at the museum and focus on a variety of topics.
