Garden Street Oil Leak Not a Danger to Residents

An underground residential oil tank on Garden Street leaked heating oil into the sewer system Tuesday night, prompting a response from health officials and the fire department.

Some Garden Street residents may catch an unpleasant whiff of fuel oil over the next few days after a residential oil tank under the street's 1000 block leaked heating oil into the sewer system Tuesday night, the city announced Wednesday.

While the odor may linger awhile, the Hudson Regional Health Commission has determined that it does not pose a danger to residents and that residents on the block are safe to remain in their homes.

The HRHC, Hoboken Office of Emergency Management, Hoboken Health Department, Hoboken Fire Department and North Hudson Sewerage Authority all responded to the spill Tuesday evening. To prevent additional leaks, responders removed all of the heating oil that remained in the tank.

The property's owner now has 10 days to remove the tank, clean the property, and flush the sewers under supervision of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
