Happy Ending For Cat Who Spent 536 Days In Hudson County Shelter
Learn what made the Liberty Humane Society's longest-tenured kitty so difficult to adopt out.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A cat that spent a whopping 536 days at a Hudson County animal shelter finally has a forever home, and rescuers couldn’t be happier.
Earlier this week, the Jersey City-based Liberty Humane Society – which also services Hoboken – reported that Nina Rodriguez, its longest-tenured resident, met her new family this past weekend at the Best Friends Holiday Pet Super Adoption event.
“She's already settled in to her home like she owns the place!” LHS staff wrote on social media. “A huge thanks goes out to the volunteers, staff and donors who have all pitched in to make this happy tail come true.”

LHS Executive Director Irene Borngraeber told Patch a little more about what made Nina Rodriguez so difficult to adopt out.
“Nina had severe skin issues that made her continually scratch herself, to the point where she had sores on her body and was missing patches of fur. She had to wear a cone often during her stay at LHS to prevent her from severely injuring her face. We tried medication after medication and took her to two different dermatological veterinarians, who finally recommended environmental and food allergy testing. It turns out Nina is allergic to nearly everything! Finding adopters who were willing to look beyond her healing body and would continue to address her long-term allergies was a huge challenge.”
