HOBOKEN, NJ — While vaccinations are stemming the numbers of hospitalizations and deaths due to coronavirus, the state of New Jersey said Thursday that there was an uptick in hospitalizations statewide, likely due to the rapidly spreading Delta variant. On Saturday, Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla said the mile-square city similarly has seen an "uptick" in cases — the majority of which are among vaccinated, rather than unvaccinated, residents.

"Among our breakthrough cases of those who are fully vaccinated, none have been hospitalized, and the large majority have had mild to no symptoms," Bhalla says.

Of the July cases, Bhalla noted, 32 were vaccinated and 26 were unvaccinated.

"As is widely known, if you are fully vaccinated your chances of getting COVID-19 substantially diminish," Bhalla said. "However, given the additional breakthrough cases among vaccinated individuals, Dr. Javed Islam from Prompt MD recommends that fully vaccinated individuals who have prolonged, close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 quarantine and get tested at least 5-7 days after the latest exposure, even without symptoms. While this is a slight deviation from the CDC’s guidance, it is an extra layer of caution that I believe to be prudent given recent trends."

The city hit a vaccine milestone recently, he said, with 70 percent of adult residents vaccinated.

Delta Variant And Increase In Cases

The highly transmissible delta variant now makes up approximately 83 percent of cases in the United States, the city said Saturday.

"I’m encouraged that several residents who previously were unvaccinated, chose to get the shot this week with 38 residents getting the vaccine (first or second shot) at Tuesday’s clinic with Medicine Man," Bhalla said. The vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, and reduces the chance of hospitalization and death for those who get it, medical professionals say. Children under 12 still cannot be vaccinated for the virus.

This week, Gov. Phil Murphy wrote:

Statewide And National Deaths And Hospitalizations

As of Thursday, there were four confirmed deaths statewide from the virus since the day before, and more than 300 people hospitalized, the state said. These numbers are far below the daily deaths at the beginning of this calendar year, which numbered over 100 per day, with more than 1,500 people hospitalized on a given day.

More than 606,000 Americans have now died from COVID (see which states have the highest recent death rates here).

In New Jersey, 64 percent of residents have gotten at least the first shot of the vaccination.
