HOBOKEN, NJ — One lane of traffic near the entrance to Hoboken from Jersey City will close daily starting Wednesday for utility work, the city said.

The closure, for a PSE&G modernization program, will impact the eastbound portion of Newark Street beginning that day.

"PSE&G will begin upgrading infrastructure on Newark Street between Henderson and Grove Streets," the city said in a message. "The work is part of the PSE&G Gas System Modernization Project and involves replacing older gas mains and service lines with stronger, more durable materials, to support a safer, cleaner, and more reliable gas system."

Detour signs will be posted, and Hoboken Police will be on site to assist with traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

Westbound traffic will not be impacted.

The city said that PSE&G expects the work to last approximately three weeks.

They expect to complete it before the upcoming closure of Marin Boulevard, on the Jersey City side of the border, as part of the federal Rebuild by Design project to protect Hoboken from storm surges from the Hudson River.

"The Marin Boulevard closure, originally scheduled for early July, has been delayed due to unforeseen subsurface conditions which were identified during test pitting operations and require additional utility coordination, design, and procurement of materials," the city said.
