Hudson County Assembly Slates File To Run In Democratic Primary

Who's facing off for the June Democratic primary to represent Hoboken and Jersey City in the Assembly? Several slates filed Monday to run.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — While national politics may be commanding much of the news cycle, several local races are heated, including a contest to see who will get the Democratic nomination to run for two Assembly seats representing Hudson County in November. The primary race to choose the two nominees will take place in June.

Jersey City-based housing policy expert Katie Brennan and Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla filed more than 1,800 signatures Monday under the slogan "Democrats for the People" and said they are "running independent from any party bosses or political machine." Only 250 signatures were needed per person to get on the ballot.

They said they're focusing on "making housing more affordable, improving public transportation, acting on climate change, making government more accountable, and standing up to the Trump administration’s attacks on democracy."

Also vying for the spots are Hoboken Library Director Jennie Pu and Jersey City Buildings and Street Maintenance Director Crystal Fonseca. Both are backed by the regular Hudson County Democratic Organization, the longtime local political machine.

The two candidates with the most votes in June will progress to the November general election and face off against Republicans and third party candidates. (Third party and unaffiliated candidates must file petitions to run by 4 p.m. on June 10.)

New Jersey Monitor reported that 209 Assembly candidates filed by the Monday deadline to run in Democratic and Republican primaries this year, up from 170 two years ago. An expert suggested that the governor's race was a factor.

The Democratic primary election will be held on June 10.
