Major Road Closure Near Hoboken/Jersey City Border Postponed

The closure of a major road near the Hoboken/Jersey City border due to a federal anti-flood program has been pushed back, the city said.

HOBOKEN, NJ — As Hoboken continues its federally funded project to add flood walls to both ends of town, a major road closure has been pushed back for a week.

The closure of part of Jersey Avenue near the Hoboken border has been postponed from this coming Tuesday until April 7, the state Department of Environmental Protection told the city this week.

The road was originally scheduled to close in both directions between Harrison Street in Hoboken and 18th Street in Jersey City for approximately one month, raising concerns from residents and council members.

Traffic mitigation strategies, including extra lanes on Grove and Newark Streets, will be implemented before that date, the city of Hoboken said.

The Rebuild by Design project will protect Hoboken, and portions of Weehawken and Jersey City from storm surge flooding.

Plans began after Hurricane Sandy, which brought 500 million gallons of stormwater to mile-square Hoboken, the city noted.

When complete, the flood protection system will remove approximately 80 percent of the city from the FEMA-designated flood plain, helping to reduce flood insurance rates, the city said.

A road was already closed for three months uptown for the project. PAST COVERAGE: Uptown Hoboken Street To Close For 'Rebuild By Design'
