HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — A Hudson County animal shelter is doing its part to help save dogs and cats from the wrath of Hurricane Dorian.

Earlier this week, the Liberty Humane Society (LHS) partnered with Best Friends Animal Society to transport 14 cats and dogs from shelters in the path of the storm in a single night. In all, the LHS hopes to help evacuate more than 150 animals from shelters in North and South Carolina.

“Evacuating animals from shelters before the storm helps save those animals from danger and prepares the local shelter be to help victims of the storm in their community,” the shelter reported.

LHS staff continued:

“After Hurricane Sandy ravaged parts of New Jersey and the Northeast, a tremendous network of shelters and organizations helped LHS as we overcame power issues, resource obstacles and repairs. With Dorian looming over the Carolinas, we also need to make sure we do our part.”

According to the LHS, the emergency transfers of animals required additional resources, both for the initial rescues and the medical monitoring that animals will need to ensure they’re healthy and ready for adoption.
