HOBOKEN, NJ — Hoboken's newest supermarket, Whole Foods, will open Thursday at 8 a.m., the company said.

The first 300 customers in line will receive a free tote bag, and samples will be available in the store, the company said.

The supermarket fills a former bank building at the busy corner of First and Washington streets, five blocks from Hoboken's train terminal.

"Both locations are designed to bring fresh, high-quality ingredients to customers with a convenience that fits their fast-paced urban lifestyles," the company said.

No High-Fructose Corn Syrup

All food at Whole Foods Market must meet the company’s rigorous Quality Standards, which prohibit hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup and more than 300 flavors, colors, sweeteners and other ingredients commonly found in food, they said.

And all beauty and body care products must meet the company’s body care standards, which ban more than 240 commonly used ingredients, including phthalates, parabens and microbeads.

Other Offerings

Whole Foods Market has opened four Daily Shop locations in New York City and Virginia, whose most popular items are fresh berries, grapes, avocados, and ready-to-eat foods like rotisserie chickens.

The new store will include "an ample selection of fresh, seasonal produce, meat and seafood; prepared foods options, including sandwiches, pre-packed meals and breads; and supplements, as well as a handpicked range of local specialties and 365 by Whole Foods Market brand products."

The store will also include more than 350 local products from 250 Northeast-based suppliers, they said.

Donating To Homeless Shelter

Whole Foods Market will also donate to area charities, including The Hoboken Shelter and Hoboken Community Center, as well as Trinity Human Services in New York City.

"As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting local communities, Whole Foods Market will make food donations to Table to Table and City Harvest, through the company’s Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program, which aims to enhance the ability of local food rescue organizations to transport surplus food to areas facing the greatest need," they said.

Whole Foods was founded in Austin in 1980.
